Catalogue Note

This charming, atmospheric image of a cottage seen through trees, compositionally rather reminiscent of Hobbema, is comparable in the handling of the foliage and the forms of the figures with a number of drawings by Jacob van Ruisdael.  Three drawings in the Bredius Museum, The Hague, though in some respects slightly sketchier, are otherwise very similar in handling to this drawing, and share the same format.1  The figures are also comparable with those in Ruisdael's early "Dresden Sketchbook" drawings.2
