Catalogue Note
This drawing bears all of the characteristic vivacity that one associates with Géricault's preliminary studies, particularly when he chose to depict subjects of an equine nature. It is likely that the present work was executed during the year Géricault spent in Italy from 1816-17, and the composition on the reverse of the sheet is particularly reminiscent of the figures and horses in the lower right portion of his painting, Start of the Race of the Barberi Horses.1
