Catalogue Note

This image of the high altar of St. Peter's, set beneath Bernini's magnificent baldacchino, is reminiscent of other treatments of the same scene by Louis-Jean Desprez, who made a number of drawings and prints of this famous vista.  One of these, produced in collaboration with Francesco Piranesi as part of a series of engraved views of Italy, is a highly atmospheric depiction of the Illumination of the Cross in St. Peter's on Good Friday.1
