Description

  • Antoine-Charles-Horace Vernet, called Carle Vernet
  • Mounted Arabs
  • Pen and brown ink and grey and brown wash, heightened with white, over black chalk;
    signed with the artist's initials, lower left: CV.

Provenance

With M.R. Schweitzer Gallery, New York

Condition

Laid down on an old sheet. The sheet has discoloured somewhat, as is evident from the areas to the sheets edges, where it has previously been covered by a mount, where the sheet maintains some of its original colour. There are a number of small light brown stains to the lower half of the sheet and areas of light surface dirt throughout. The white heightening has oxidized in places, although generally the ink and wash is still fresh and the image strong. Sold in a modern giltwood frame.
