Catalogue Note
Stylistically, this impressive and elaborate drawing would appear to have been executed by an artist active in the south of France in the 18th Century, who was clearly influenced by Natoire.
The subject of the drawing is likely to depict the Betrothal of Theagenes and Chariclea, a story from an ancient Greek novel written by Heliodorus of Emesa, which is also known as Aethiopica, 'The Ethiopian Story.'
