Catalogue Note
Leonhard Posch of Tyrol, Austria (1750 - 1831) was a modeller, medallist and sculptor famous for his extremely fine relief portraits. He initially trained as an apprentice under the sculptor Johann Baptist Hagenauer in Salzburg. After completing his studies he worked in Vienna, then in 1803 he moved to Hamburg, and in 1804 to Berlin, where he remained until 1810, before moving to Paris. In Paris Posch stayed until Napoleon's fall in 1814. In the summer of 1814 he decided to return to Berlin and remained there until his death in 1831.
A comparable example of this form is in the collection of Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin, acquired for the collection in 1988 by Die Freunde Preußischer Schlösser und Gärten.
