Description

  • Two tortoiseshell snuff boxes, probably German or Italian, circa 1730-1740
  • silver, silver-gilt, tortoiseshell
each of cartouche form, the first, double-opening, with silver-gilt mounts, the upper lid with gold piqué posé decoration of architectural ornament, the bombé sides and base with rocaille ornament, the interior lid and base decorated with gold piqué leafy scrolls, following the carving of the lid, apparently unmarked, 7.5cm., 3in.; the lid of the second with Commedia dell'Arte figures and urns of flowers in silver architectural pavilions, silver mounts, apparently unmarked, 8cm., 3 1/8 in. wide

Condition

1: overall good condition apart from a few cracks to top right hand corner of inside lid to base, not visible from the outside. repairs to rim of top lid. mounts possibly later 2. overall good condition apart from two chips to front of box by rim.
