Description
- Swedish School, 17th Century
- Portrait of King Gustavus Adolphus II of Sweden (1594-1632)
- inscribed upper left: GVSTAVVS ADOLPHVS SVEC./ GOTH. ET VANDAL. REX.
and charged with the coat-of-arms of the House of Vasa - oil on canvas
Condition
The canvas is relined and has a degree of surface dirt. There are multiple horizontal old cracks in the paint surface, along which there are some tiny losses. There is a small old damage visible at the top right in the R of REX, and another measuring 2 by 2 inches at the bottom right hand corner. Under ultraviolet light an old thick varnish is visible, and some patches of old, crude, restoration but generally the painting appears to be in otherwise fairly untouched condition.
Offered in a wood and plaster frame with some losses.
