The canvas has not been lined. As visible in the catalogue illustration there is a small area of abrasion and paint flaking below the centre of the composition and towards the right of the lower edge. Under ultra-violet light the old varnish layers fluoresce evenly and quite opaquely, and only minor signs of retouching are visible, notably some minor spots near the framing edges and a small stroke in the tomb in the lower-left quadrant. Presented in a simple gilt frame.
