Catalogue Note

The present portrait can be dated by General Blücher's medals to between 7 June 1814 and August 1815. On his arrival in London for the Allied Sovereigns' Visit to England in 1814, accompanied by King Frederick Wilhelm III of Prussia and Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, Blücher received a brilliant diamond-studded portrait medallion of King George IV of the United Kingdom. Visible in the present work, this medallion can also be seen in two portraits of General Blücher by Thomas Lawrence. Here the sitter is not yet wearing the Blücherstern (Blücher Star) received in August 1815 following victory at the Battle of Waterloo, providing a terminus ante quem.

Born in Düsseldorf, Ströhling spent much of the first two decades of the nineteenth century in London, and was styled 'Historical Painter to the Prince of Wales' during the period 1810-1820. The British Royal Collection holds an important group of small-scale portrait on copper by the artist.
