Description
- Andries Cornelis Lens
- Perseus with Minerva discovering the sleeping Medusa;Sea nymphs discovering the hair of Medusa turning to coral
- a pair, both oil on canvas
Condition
Both canvases have firm relinings. There is a degree of surface dirt on both pictures, although the overall condition is good. Both pictures are somewhat lighter than the catalogue images suggest. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals and a thick and slightly discoloured varnish, which fluoresces opaque under ultra violet light. Also revealed are some scattered, localised retouchings on both pictures.
Inspection of the Sea Nymphs canvas under ultra violet light reveals five small, restored, old damages. Four of which are in the top left quarter of the picture in the background. The fifth area of restored damage is visible in the shoulder of the right hand nymph. There are some older strengthenings visible in the darker tones beneath the varnish on both canvases. Inspection of Perseus with Minerva discovering the sleeping Medusa under ultra violet light reveals an area of old restored damage measuring 2 by 2 inches, near the left hand margin in the background foliage.
