Catalogue Note

Friedrich Johann Gottlieb Lieder, called Franz, (1780-1859) was a painter of miniature portraits in watercolours and oil, as well as a lithographer, and exhibited at the Academy of Berlin in 1797 and 1802. In 1804, he went to Paris where he became a pupil of the celebrated painter David. After his marriage, he worked in Budapest, Pressburg and from about 1810 in Vienna. He was very successful and was a protégé of the statesman Metternich (1773-1859). Between 1816 and 1819, he lived in Berlin where he painted the Royal Family and became a painter to Frederick William III.
