Catalogue Note

Sir Thomas Mills était un soldat de l’armée britannique. Il s’enrôla en 1759 et l’année suivante il était Lieutenant dans le 47ème regiment d’infanterie. Il servit au Quebec et en Angleterre et fut anoblit en 1772. 

Après des études de droit à Edimbourg puis à Leipzig, Sir Ralph Abercrombie de Tullibody rejoignit l’armée. Pendant la guerre de sept ans, il servit en Allemagne puis en Irlande et, prenant rapidement du gallon, il devint commandant du 103e régiment d’infanterie du King’s Irish Guards 1780. En 1784, il fut promut major-général et servit aux Caraïbes, en Irlande, en Ecosse, aux Pays-Bas et en Afrique du nord pendant les guerres napoléoniennes. En 1800 il est élevé au titre de commandant des troupes britanniques en Méditerranée. Il fut tué lors d’une manœuvre en Egypte en 1801.

Sir Thomas Mills was a solider in the British army. Having enrolled  in 1759, by 1760 he held the rank of Lieutenant in the 47th Foot regiment. He served in Quebac and England and was knighted in 1772.

Having studied law at both Edinburgh and Leipzig Universities, Sir Ralph Abercrombie of Tullibody joined the army. During the Seven Years War he served in Germany and Ireland and, rising quickly through the ranks, he became commander of the 103rd foot, King’s Irish in 1780. In 1784 he was promoted to Major-General and during the Napoleonic wars he served in the West Indies, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, and North Africa. In 1800 he was appointed commander of Britain's troops in the Mediterranean and was killed in action in Egypt in 1801.
