Catalogue Note

According to Kane, this is probably the earliest mark that Cowell used.  He was operating his own shop by 1707, when Samuel Sewall - a family friend - noted in his diary, "Billy Cowell's shop is entered by the Chimney, and a considerable quantity of Plate stolen" (cited Kane, p. 349).
