Catalogue Note

The initials are those of Catharine McPhaedres, who married Robert Gilbert Livingston (1713-1789) in New York City on November 3, 1740. Their daughter Catharine Livingston married John Reade. The later initials on the top are presumably those of their son, Robert Livingston Reade. The attempt to change the P on the base to an R probably occurred when Catharine Livingston married John Reade.

There are two other known matching dishes by the same maker with the initials CMP on the base. One is in the Museum of the City of New York and is illustrated in Deborah Dependahl Waters, Elegant Plate, Vol. I, no. 57. This dish has a later initial L on the top. Another came on the New York market in 1979, but with the initials CLR on the top, probably those of Catherine Livingston Reade, Catharine Livingston and John Reade's daughter.
