Catalogue Note

This basket and the matching beaker following are both en suite with a salver by John Burt Lyng, also monogrammed EDP, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. According to the donor of that item in 1942, it belonged to Margaret de Peyster (1749-1819) and her husband Colonel Thomas James (d. c. 1821).  It passed to their daughter Margaretta Sarah James Martin (1780-c. 1828), her daughter Julia Moolton Martin, then to her granddaughter Julia Stuyvesant Winterhoff; the family member represented by EDP has not been determined.
