Catalogue Note

A matching salver by Gilbert in the Museum of the City of New York is illustrated in Deborah Dependahl Waters, Elegant Plate, Vol. II, no. 192. A cann (no. 191) engraved with the same Bayard crest is also in the collection. Both pieces came to the donor with a history of ownership by her ancestor Nicholas Bayard (1736-1798), who married Catherine Livingston (1743-1775), daughter of Peter Van Brugh and Mary Alexander Livingston, in 1762.
