Catalogue Note

There are several related Ozias Goodwins who could have been the recipient of this gift.  Perhaps the most likely is Captain Ozias Goodwin (1755-1819), who settled in Boston and was a member of the Boston Marine Society.  In 1813 he was a witness for a deposition on the impressment of American seamen by the British navy, where he stated, "I, Ozias Goodwin, of Boston, merchant, do depose and say - that I was a master of a vessel about eighteen years from the port of Boston, until the year 1799 - and since that time have been concerned in commerce and navigation" (Fennimore and Wagner, p. 121).
