Catalogue Note
William Bainbridge (1774-1833) became a national hero with his capture of the British frigate Java in December, 1812. On his death, this action was described as one "of those victories which established the character of the American Navy." The city of Philadelphia had a subscription for "an elegant piece of plate, to be presented to Com. Bainbridge, in testimony of the high sense entertained of his gallantry" that was advertised in many seacoast states (Fennimore and Wagner p. 130). The monumental urn that was the main portion of this presentation is today known only from a sketch, but this basket would have been part of accompanying table service.
A water pitcher by Thomas Fletcher was presented by Commodore Bainbridge to "George S. Sproston, M.D., U.S. Navy", sold Christie's, New York, January 26, 1995, lot 382.
