Catalogue Note

Dexter Thurber (1781-1871) based his fortune on a paper mill he ran with his father, then expanded into cotton mills.  He married in 1803 Hannah Gorham. According to Cutler's New England Families (1915), "Mr. Dexter Thurber financed... for his son Edmund, the Franklin Foundry & Machine Company, also the Gorham Manufacturing Company for his nephew, John Gorham."  The relationship was even closer, as his son Gorham Thurber was partner with his cousin from 1850 in Gorham & Thurber, known by 1852 as Gorham & Co.
