Catalogue Note

William Adams was a New York City political figure as well as a silversmith, serving in the 1840s as assistant alderman and alderman for the Fifth Ward (modern Tribeca).  He was also friends with Senator Henry Clay, whose 1842 tariff protected American silversmiths from foreign competition.
