worked in silk stitches on a woolsey-linsey ground, signed and dated at center, Hannah Woolbridge Work AD 1811, with a pious verse, house, figure of a seated woman and standing man with animals.

Catalogue Note

Hannah Woolbridge was the fourteen-year old granddaughter of Mrs. Martha Barber.  This sampler links a group of samplers to Mrs. Barber's School, worked by a member of the Barber family.

A closely related example worked by Mary Sparhawk of Marblehead, dated 1817, and is illustrated in Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, volume I, p. 143, fig. 159.
