Catalogue Note
We have no record of any paintings by C.G. Jung (1875-1961) being offered at auction, although a few have been sold privately. This painting is similar in size and subject to several in Jung's celebrated "Red Book" (1913-1929), the private album where he recorded his inner visionary journey during those years. This manuscript was for many years inaccessible to Jungian scholars.
Helton Godwin ("Peter") Baynes (1882-1943) was an important associate of Jung in Zurich from c.1920. He first introduced Jungian psychology to England in 1922 and remained a close friend and associate of Jung’s until his early death in 1943. This painting has remained within Baynes's family ever since and has never been published or discussed by Jung scholars. The childlike figure of 'Phanes', is a philosophical attempt to grasp and illustrate the creative drive known to man by subjective experience.
