Catalogue Note

FIRST EDITION. Fontana was architect to the pope and arranged for the move of the Egyptian obelisk to the piazza in front of St Peter's. The numerous finely-engraved plates depict the engineering feats required to effect the move, as well as some of the other buildings in Rome that Fontana worked on, including the Vatican Library. Another edition was published at Naples in 1604.
