Description

  • Wagner, Richard
  • Fine autograph letter signed (“Richard Wagner”), to his friend the singer Josef Tichatschek, the first Rienzi and Tannhäuser
  • paper
a letter in which Wagner expresses his regret and sorrow for not having seen the tenor for such a long time and his fears of a rift between them adduced by the silence, explaining that he has been ill and is taking a cure at Mornex, near Geneva, and in sight of Mont Blanc, which he hopes will help him return to work on his operas; he states that his collaborations with Tichatschek have been the most stimulating moments in his career; he discusses his exile from Dresden, which now is seven years, sends news of his wife Minna and enquires after Frau Pauline

3 pages, 8vo (21 x 13cm), on blue notepaper, Mornex (near Geneva), 27 June [18]56, some splitting at folds

Catalogue Note

This is practically a love letter from Wagner to the tenor who helped make his early operas so successful. The exiled Wagner, cut off from his German homeland, was now engaged on composing the music for The Ring. There was no role for Tichatschek there, but his voice must nevertheless have been an inspiration for the heldentenor roles such as Siegmund and Siegfried.
