Catalogue Note
The première of Verdi's final tragic opera Otello on 5 February 1887 was one of the most keenly-anticipated in La Scala's history. Tamagno made a great impression in the title role, sealing his fame forever. Verdi has evidently had some trouble in writing on the surface on this occasion, particularly the initial of his name and in underlining the date.
