Catalogue Note
Stravinsky's Serenade in A dates from 1925, and is arguably his most successful work for solo piano. It was specifically designed so that each of its four movements would fit on to one side of a ten-inch gramophone record. Stravinsky wrote that the 'Rondoletto' "with its sustained and rhythmic movement, took the place of the various kinds of dance-music usually intercalated in [eighteenth-century] serenades" (Stravinsky, Chroniques de ma vie).
