4to (224 x 165mm.), engraved printer's device on first title-page, woodcut device on second title-page, woodcut initials and illustrations, with duplicate of B2-3 bound between qq1-2, RED MOROCCO GILT FOR NICOLAS-CLAUDE FABRI DE PEIRESC, most probably by Simon Corberan in Aix-en-Provence, with his Greek monogram on covers, double gilt fillet borders, flat spine gilt in compartments, red speckled edges, autograph notes by Peiresc on Oo1-4 (Frontinus on aqueducts) and Rr1 (laws on aqueducts) and Vu1v (commentary on Frontinus) and Xx1 (Frontinus on borders), underlining in ink, occasional light spotting or browning or damp-staining, extremities very slightly rubbed

This was an important edition of Vegetius, Aelianus, Frontinus and other writers on military subjects, together with a lengthy and detailed commentary which was published here for the first time.

The flower tool on the spine is also shown in Pollard's "Changes in the style of bookbinding, 1550-1830", The Library, fifth series, XI (1956), plate II(c), on a book printed in Paris in 1621.
