Catalogue Note

Rare.  The quotation is from the first of Shostakovich's a cappella settings of Ten Poems on Texts by Revolutionary Poets, op.88 (1951): 'Smeley, druzya, idem vpered' ("Courage, Friends, on we go!"), the words by L. Radin.  The chorus opens with the four voices in unison, and the second and third bars for soprano, alto and tenor.   This was Shostakovich's first concert work for unaccompanied chorus.
