Catalogue Note
Ravel composed the three Chansons madécasses in 1925-1926, scored for voice, flute, cello and piano. 'Il est doux' begins with this duo for flute and cello; throughout, the cello plays natural harmonics, then muted and finally artificial harmonics. The languid exotic textures and harmony portray a Madagascan man lounging beneath a tree at the close of a day, awaiting the evening breeze, so that he can command the women to dance ("it is sweet to rest during the heat beneath a tufted tree, and to wait for the evening breeze to bring refreshment...").
