Catalogue Note

This copy also contains three leaves with Muretus's oration on the death of Pius V, who died in 1572, bound after quire Qq.

Peiresc's bindings were some of the earliest to include the date of publication on the spine, usually at the top corner of the spine compartment beneath the title. Corberan, the binder of this volume, was employed at Peiresc's house in Aix from 1625 until Peiresc's death; he produced not just simple bindings like this but also fanfare bindings (see Henry Davis Gift, 129, which is also a volume relating to Panvinio on the popes). The morocco used for his books was sourced by Peiresc from the Levant.
