Catalogue Note
This magnificent photograph is one of the largest and grandest signed by a major composer to have passed through these rooms. This was Puccini's first transatlantic journey, invited by an Argentine newspaper to attend an all-Puccini festival in Buenos Aires. In Montevideo on 9 August, Puccini was greeted by hundreds of fans in small boats in the harbour and by crowds on land. At the Teatro Solís he directed a performance of Tosca and the day before he left he was received at the Conservatorio Musical de Montevideo where the director Scarabelli gave a moving speech. Manon Lescaut was given at the Solís on 16 August to mark the composer's farewell from Montevideo.
