Catalogue Note
This is the first edition of the Cretan Franciscus Portus's translation of Thucydides into Latin, based on that of Valla as revised by Henri Estienne. It was also printed by Wechel in quarto and sixteenmo in the same year.
The laurel branch oval on the covers is very similar to one used by the Eve bindery in Paris in the late sixteenth century (see Henry Davis Gift, 109).
