Catalogue Note
RARE. Janacek's alterations to his score in this manuscript were apparently used for the early performances rather than the first edition. Although he makes his corrections to the orchestral parts in German, Vec Makropulos (“The Makropulos Case”) only appeared in vocal score during his lifetime (1926, in Vienna). According to the pencil annotations, these corrections were entered in the manuscript performing parts, possibly for the première. The full score was not published until 1970 and performances before then used copies of variable quality from the manuscript full score. The first such performance was at the National Theatre in Brno on 18 December 1926, and the next, also in Janacek's presence, at Prague on 1 March 1928. We have not seen any autograph music by Janácek at auction for several years; The Makropulos Case is one of the great operas from his final period.
