Catalogue Note

Dr Charles East was Elgar's doctor at the time he composed the "Enigma" Variations, which was begun shortly after he penned this inscription.  See C. Kent, Edward Elgar: A Thematic Catalogue and Research Guide (2013) p.476n.  East was also particularly important caring for Elgar at the time of The Apostles. See  J.N. Moore, Edward Elgar (1984), p.489.
