Catalogue Note

This is the earliest copyright assignment signed by Chopin to have appeared for sale, and indeed these five works were the first by him to be published by the London firm of C.F. Wessel.  Designed to be issued simultaneously in London, Leipzig and Paris, Wessel's edition of Chopin's Fantaisie Brillante sur des Airs Nationaux Polonois op.13 appeared in April 1834, evidently the same month as Schlesinger's Paris edition.  He issued the Krakowiak, Grand Rondo de Concert, in May 1834, possibly (but not certainly) predating the continental editions.  Op.15 was published as Les Zephyrs. 7me 8me et 9me Nocturnes, pour le Piano Forte in May 1834, and Op.16 as Rondo Elegant in August 1834, the same month as the famous set of Four (despite the description here) Mazurkas Op.17, as Souvenir de la Pologne. Troisième Recueil, de Mazurkas.
