about his Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Beethoven, Op. 86, noting that he will only give his approval if the theme is notated as he intended, noting that all Riemann-like rhythmic displacements are not required, asking for advice and information, arranging a meeting after his concert on 28 December, and noting how terrible it is that he is always in a rush ("...es ist schrecklich, wie ich immer abgehetzt bin..."), written in black and red ink

Catalogue Note

Reger's Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Beethoven, Op. 86, for two pianos, one of Reger's favourite concert pieces, dates from the summer of 1904. The music theorist Hugo Riemann (1849-1919), mentioned here, had been Reger's composition teacher from 1890.
