Description
- Berlioz, Hector
- Two autograph letters signed ("H. Berlioz"), one, unpublished, about his Roméo et Juliette
- paper
one to Louis Costard de Mézeray, asking if he could look for his vocal score of Roméo et Juliette, which he has not found in the packets which have come back from Bordeaux, noting that it is his only copy, 1 page, 8vo, Paris, 24 June, [1859], some light creasing; the other to Alfred-Auguste Cuvillier-Fleury, expressing his gratitude for his magnificent review of his book, humorously observing that if it was his wish to give him inordinate pleasure, to make him roar with laughter and feel a stinging tear of shame in the corner of his eyes, then he has succeeded completely, stating that he treats him unfortunately as a man of letters, and noting what disappointment those who have been encouraged by his article to glance through his book will experience, 1 page, 8vo, no place, Sunday, 23 March, [1845], some light creasing to upper margin
...Si vous avez voulu me donner une joie excessive et me faire rire de moi même à gorge deployée, en sentant par ci par là quelque larme honteuse poindre dans le coin de mes yeux, vous avez complètement réussi...

Catalogue Note
In June 1859 Berlioz had performed excerpts from his great choral symphony Roméo et Juliette (1839) in Bordeaux, where Louis Costard de Mézeray (1810-1887) was conductor at the Grand Théâtre.
Cuvillier-Fleury’s article on Berlioz’s book Voyage Musical appeared in the Journal des Débats on the same date as Berlioz’s letter (23 March 1845).
