Catalogue Note

The style of the binding is very similar to those of Andrea di Lorenzo, formerly known as the "Mendoza" binder, who was active in Venice from c. 1518 to c. 1555; "the majority of simple retail bindings from this shop cover Aldine imprints and date from c. 1518/19-1534" (Henry Davis Gift, p.322). Davis Gift 262 is a "Mendoza" binding on the same text. The decoration is composed of gilt and blind fillets, which is characteristic of Andrea di Lorenzo, and the lettering has the same distinctive triangular dots.
