Catalogue Note

The early nineteenth century in France was a period of Egyptomania, fuelled by Napoleon's campaign in Egypt and the archaeological research that followed in its wake. Champollion (1790-1832) made his name as the decipherer of the Rosetta Stone. His first major publication, L'Égypte sous les Pharaons, appeared shortly after Etienne Quatremere's own Egyptological work, which led to claims of plagiarism; the favourable review of both works by Saint-Martin (the second item listed above) clarifies that Champollion's introduction to his book was printed (in October 1810) before Quatremere's book (in January 1811), which is why Champollion does not cite Quatremere as one of his sources.

Champollion's offprint on the Coptic name of Memphis is his first published work.
