Catalogue Note

The present letter dates from the artist’s second stay in Beaulieu (2 April to early December 1918), where the family of his wife Josette owned a house. There, he was able to get away from the Parisian artistic rivalries and escape the bombardment of the capital, so that he could immerse himself in his work.

Some ten still-life paintings dated between April and July 1918 are known. Presumably the following pictures are referred to: “Landscape at Beaulieu”, dated May 1918 (collection of Dr. Friedrich Zürich); “Landscape at Beaulieu”, dated April 1918 (Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo); and “The Village”, dated July 1918.
