Catalogue Note
This short note dates from Gauguin's stay in Brittany in 1894, during which he broke his right leg in a brawl with sailors. This injury caused him to be confined to bed for two months and would never heal properly. It was during this period that Gauguin is believed to have created the image (made from snippets of postage stamps glued to a ceramic tile) that became the basis of the Gismonda poster by the Czech artist Alphonse Mucha, a design which inaugurated the Art Nouveau movement.
