  • A collection of 16 leaves in Church Slavonic, each containing the portrait of a saint. [Russia, late eighteenth century]

16 leaves, 8vo (160 x 105mm.), manuscript in red and black ink on paper with hand-coloured illustrations and portraits of saints, each leaf mounted, some with conjoint leaves of manuscript text, a few leaves folded to fit the mounts, paper repairs at foot of most leaves with some loss of text, some staining

Catalogue Note

A charming group of portraits of Russian saints, together with a picture of the Virgin and Child on a crescent moon, which would have been the first page in the book that the pages are taken from. The text names Catherine I as Empress, which dates the leaves to the later eighteenth century.
