Catalogue Note
Francesco Nerli the younger, archbishop of Florence from November 1671 to 1682, was papal legate to Poland-Lithuania from September 1670 to February 1671. This is his account of various aspects of the kingdom, from the king (Michael Wisniowiecki, ruled 1669-1673) and queen (Eleanor of Austria) to the Cossacks, including a chapter on the Metropolitan of Russia. This was a period of substantial attacks by the Turks into European territory; while King Michael would cede vast tracts of land in Ukraine to the Turks in 1672, Jan Sobieski then defeated them in battle in 1673 to become king himself. We have found no other manuscript of Nerli's account of Poland; this is presumably NERLI'S PRESENTATION COPY TO THE POPE.
The same tools can be seen on Legature papali (Vatican City, 1977) nos 225 and 226 (for Alexander VII), and the border and cornerpieces match those on plate 69 of Legatura romana barocca 1565-1700, also containing a manuscript dated 1671, attributed to the Andreoli bindery.
