Catalogue Note

Clement IX (Giulio Rospigliosi, pope from 1667 to 1669) was the patron of a Roman bindery named after him the Rospigliosi Binder, which is now known to have been owned by the Andreoli brothers (active 1655-1699).

Legature papali (Vatican City, 1977) records just one (embroidered) binding for Clement IX, who died on 9 December 1669. Henry Davis Gift 368, a Roman armorial binding probably by Gregorio Andreoli c. 1658, has the same roll-tooled border as this binding, as do Legatura romana barocco 1565-1700 plate 68 (dated 1670 with a very similar frame design) and Legature papali nos 235 and 238 (both for Alexander VII, 1655-1667). The last two also contain the same papal tiara and keys stamp.
