Catalogue Note

A CRISP CLEAN COPY. The dating is based on the preface in the Bollanus, addressed to Doge Niccolò Marcello, who died on 1 December 1474. The printers produced another edition shortly afterwards, dated c. 1477-78 (Goff C139).

Caracciolo, a Franciscan, was one of the most prolific preachers of the later fifteenth century. This is the first printing of Domenico Bollani's treatise on the conception of the Virgin Mary, which was written from the Franciscan perspective (see lot 10 for another work on this theological dispute of the 1470s). It was appended to many different editions of Caracciolo's various sermons.
