Condition

There are a few small marks, and the ink in Verdi's inscription is rather light in places, as if he had a little difficulty writing on the shiny surface. There is some foxing to the printed mount, but not to the photograph itself. There are annotations by later hands on verso.

Catalogue Note

The première of Verdi's final tragic opera Otello on 5 February 1887 was one of the most keenly-anticipated in La Scala's history.   Tamagno made a great impression in the title role, sealing his fame forever.  Verdi has evidently had some trouble in writing on the surface on this occasion, particularly the initial of his name and the underlining of the date.
