Catalogue Note
This is a contemporary volume of Schubert's first major publications, comprising four first issues and two very early issues. All six have the original imprint "in Commission bey Cappi und Diabelli", i.e. without the copyright notice added later ("Eigenthum der Verleger"). None has plate numbers on the music plates, so we understand that they can be no later than November 1821. All show traces of the original Control-Numbers inscribed at the bottom of the final pages, which only appear on the earliest issues (although these numbers have been cropped by the binder). Deutsch gives a publication dates of 22 May, 29 May and 9 July 1821 for the Goethe settings in Opp.3-5.
