Catalogue Note

Herold wrote this early concerto after winning the Prix de Rome in 1812.  It was only published much later, by O'Kelly of Paris (1887-1888).  There is a copy of O'Kelly's edition for two pianos in the British Library and a copy of the edition in parts in the Bibliothèque Nationale,  The autograph manuscript of Herold's Premier Concerto, also in Paris (BN. Mus. Vm7 17935), has similar string parts as here: i.e. without separate parts for cello and contrabasso.   The autograph piano part is not marked up, nor apparently ever used for any publication.
