Catalogue Note

Roubiliac's life-size marble statue of Handel is a classic image of the composer.  It was commissioned for Vauxhall Gardens in 1738, where it remained for about eighty years, and is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (A.3&A-1965). This fine reproduction in bronze was produced by Elkington & Co., the leading Birmingham firm of silversmiths and, from 1855 until c.1880, also bronze founders.  The firm made numerous reproductions of famous sculptures for the National Portrait Gallery during the years 1869-1881.
